Food Corporation of India, West Zone, has provided an efficient Food Security System in the Western States of the country by fulfilling the following major objectives of the National Food Policy under the Guidance of FCI Hdqrs New Delhi.

 

Ø       Effective price support operations for safeguarding the interest of the farmers.

 

Ø      Distribution of the foodgrains through Public Distribution System and other Welfare Schemes.

 

Ø      Maintaining satisfactory level of operational and buffer stocks of foodgrains.

 

These operations are carried out under the overall supervision and direction of Executive Director (West Zone).

 

Zonal Office (West) headquartered in Mumbai came into existence on 1st March 1969 and coordinates the food management operations in FCI West Zone comprising of the following four regions.

           These four Regions operate through 20 FCI District Offices that cover 129 Revenue districts in West Zone. FCI, Zonal office (West) and the four Regional Offices are ISO 9001:2000 certified.

 

          The storage capacity with the West Zone of FCI is about 43 LMT at 279 centers out of which 69 are owned depots. There are 70 Private Godowns, 48 CWC Godowns and 83 SWC and 9 State Govt./Pvt. Godowns hired by FCI to augment own storage capacity. FCI has own storage capacity in 73 Revenue Districts & CWC/SWC/State Govt/Pvt in rest of the other Revenue Districts. Efforts are being made to add storage capacities based on the availability of infra structure like broad gauge rail lines, handling points etc. depending on additional requirements.

 

       During KMS 2009-10 in Chhattisgarh Region, there is a target of procurement of 27 LMT of Paddy against which 42.37 LMT Paddy was procured by State Govt.  Further as on 17.07.2010, 2.96 LMT of Levy rice received by FCI and 13.58 LMT CMR has been received by State Agencies. 10 LMT Paddy proposed to be transferred by State Govt. to FCI. Against this 10 LMT Paddy under transfer, FCI Chhattisgarh had accepted 2 LMT Paddy and from the accepted qty, 0.71 LMT CMR is received.

 

            In MP Region during KMS 2009-10, against the target of 2.00 LMT Paddy, the Region has procured a total of 2.07 LMT of Paddy by State Govt. Agencies.  As on 15.07.2010, about 1.05 LMT Rice has been received as CMR.

 

In Maharashtra Region, during KMS 2009-10 a total of 2.32 LMT Paddy has been procured by State Govt. against target of 2.00 LMT  and 0.19 LMT Rice has been delivered as CMR.

 

 In the year 2010-11, procurement of Wheat to Central Pool also has been done in the States of Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat in West Zone. In RMS 2010-11, Madhya Pradesh Region has procured 35.38 LMT Wheat and Gujarat has procured 0.01 LMT of Wheat.

 

There are 1.31 crore BPL cardholders and 3.44 lac APL cardholders in all states under West Zone.  Under APL/BPL/AAY Schemes, there is a total monthly requirement of 5.24 LMT of wheat & 2.53 LMT of Rice.  As on 30.06.2010, about 38.89 LMT (26.15 LMT Wheat, 12.74 LMT Rice) of foodgrains were available in the Zone, which is sufficient to meet the requirements in all States.

 

            To meet requirements under various Schemes,  substantial quantities of foodgrains  are also required to be brought / moved from Northern states especially wheat stocks.  Rice Procured in Chhattisgarh has to be moved out to other States. Substantial wheat procurement has taken place in RMS 2009-10 in two States viz. MP & Gujarat.

 

In the calendar year 2008 (12 months) a total of 25.37 Lac MT  of Wheat and 21.60 Lac MT of Rice have been received from northern states to various states in West Zone. During the year 2009 i.e. from Jan. to Dec’09, 44.53 lac MT Wheat and 14.46 lac MT Rice has been received ex-North in the 4 States of West Zone. During 2008, about 18.40 lac MT Rice has been despatched ex-Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra to other States.  From January to Dec 2009, Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra Regions have despatched about 15.44 Lac MT of Rice to other States. Because of the prudent planning and efficient foodgrain management operations the four states in the West Zone have never faced any shortage of foodgrains.
